An interesting and rather thorough eight minute analysis of one of my favorite video game characters, Squall Leonhart from Final Fantasy VIII, which notably debunks the conception of the character as an “emo.”
I’m not sure if I’d name Squall as my favorite Final Fantasy protagonist, but he is the one I relate to most, tied with Yuna from FFX. I find him a fascinating character and think his development ranks among the best in the series. Most importantly, he feels real, like an actual teenager thrust into a situation much bigger than himself. So what if the gun blade is hokey and the time traveling elements were not done as best as they could have been? The heart of the story is Squall and how he comes to cast off his own aloof, uncaring facade to open up to other people, and that is what makes this game wonderful.
